Description
L001 – Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is a large and robust catfish from the Tocantins–Araguaia system in Brazil. The species is characterized by a dark brown to almost black base color with a large number of golden to yellow-white spots over both body and fins. The large, sail-like dorsal fin gives the fish a characteristic appearance and is typical of the genus Pterygoplichthys. L001 can easily be confused with Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, but in L001 light or golden spots stand out clearly against a dark base color. Akvaforum The species becomes large. Fully grown individuals can reach about 35–40 cm, although size varies between individuals and environment. It is mainly crepuscular and nocturnal but can become relatively visible during the day when it feels safe. Towards other fish species it is normally peaceful, while large individuals, especially males, can become territorial towards other large catfish and conspecifics.
Aquarium & care
Since L001 grows quickly and becomes a powerful fish, it needs a large aquarium. For an adult individual, you should count on at least about 400 liters, preferably larger and with a proper bottom area. An aquarium of about 150–180 cm length gives significantly better opportunities to keep a fully grown fish in a good way. Akvaforum The decoration should consist of roots, larger stones, and spacious hiding places. Roots are particularly suitable because they provide both protection and surfaces where biofilm and algae can develop. Plants can be used, but large specimens are strong and can inadvertently dig up or damage sensitive plants. Sand or rounded fine gravel works well as bottom substrate. zoopet.com L001 produces large amounts of feces and therefore requires strong filtration and regular water changes. Good oxygenation and some water movement are also an advantage. Suitable water values are approximately 24–29 °C, pH around 6,5–7,5, and soft to moderately hard water. The species is relatively hardy as long as water quality is kept stable and good.
Breeding
L001 is a hole- and tunnel-brooding species. In nature, the male digs long tunnels in soft or muddy riverbanks. The female lays eggs inside the tunnel, after which the male guards eggs and fry. This reproductive method makes the species very difficult to breed in ordinary aquariums. Aquarist Atlas Most commercially bred L001 are therefore produced in large outdoor ponds, especially in Southeast Asia, where the pond's soil or clay banks give the fish the opportunity to dig natural spawning tunnels. The species can produce very large clutches compared to smaller Loricariidae. zoopet.com The sex differences are relatively difficult to see on young fish. In adult specimens, males can get larger fins and a stronger dorsal fin. The shape of the genital papilla is a more reliable characteristic when the fish are sexually mature.
Feeding
L001 is an omnivore with a strong vegetable element. Young individuals graze a lot of algae and biofilm from roots, stones, and other surfaces, but one should not consider the species as a fish that can live only on algae in the aquarium. As it gets older, interest in algae often decreases and it needs a more varied diet. zoopet.com The base can consist of sinking catfish or algae tablets with spirulina and other vegetable content. This is preferably supplemented with, for example, zucchini, bell pepper, green peas, broccoli, spinach, and other vegetables. Smaller amounts of protein-rich food such as shrimp, mussel, insect-based feed, or frozen aquarium food can be given regularly, especially to larger individuals. Tropical Fish Co It is best to feed in the evening or just before the lighting is turned off. Vegetable leftovers that have not been eaten should be removed so that they do not deteriorate water quality.
